"The real deal. If you are looking for an answer for wellness and healing, Deborah is what you seek. My knee and ankle had been aching for months and after thorough discussion, Deborah tailored a treatment for me. I am currently pain free and wholeheartedly recommend Deborah to anyone who will listen."
"Deborah has been treating pain from an old injury of mine for a couple of months now. This was my first experience with acupuncture so I didn't know what to expect going into it. With weekly sessions and some herbs that she recommended, I'm finally getting some relief after years of suffering. Her office is beautiful and relaxing and she's knowledgable and compassionate with her care. I truly can't recommend her enough!"
"After searching for three years for an acupuncturist in Santa Barbara, I found Deborah. She listened intently to my concerns, and to my many aches and pains. Since going to her, I have felt so much better, and the aches and pains I have lessened."
"I’ve been seeing Deborah for 2 ½ years. I believe her treatments played a significant role in my recovery from Long Covid twice. Deborah is always professional, kind and gentle. I strongly recommend her to anyone looking for supplemental or alternative care."
"Deborah has put together a wonderful space for her patients. She is very talented and caring and gives each person she treats her full attention. I have recently had two treatments from her for a pulled muscle in my leg, and my painful condition has greatly improved! I am so grateful to have relief."
"I have been going to see Deborah Atkinson for acupuncture for the past 5 years and it has changed my life. I struggle with chronic migraines, as long as I can remember, and initially needles didn’t sound appealing. Yet within a few treatments everything became better and manageable. Now I joke with her that I want the biggest, fattest needles she has because they feel wonderful! Not only has it lessened my migraines, but she can also stop one from coming on, arresting the inflammation. I could not be more grateful for her insightful nature, compassion, and skill. I’m blessed to have her in my life."

I am a woman, a wife, a mother, and a healer. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, I love living near the ocean. I am passionate about learning new things and exploring new ideas, as well as studying the old wisdom. I like to harmonize with, immerse myself in, and observe nature. This informs my work as a healer.
When I was 17 years old, I traveled to India with my aunt who is a medical doctor to work with Mother Teresa in Calcutta. This was a challenging journey but solidified my desire to work to help and heal others. I worked in her clinic Prem Dan for chronically ill and cast out people as well as at Kalighat, The Home for the Destitute Dying. I gained valuable experience and learned a lot working and traveling around India and other countries.
I thought I wanted to be a medical doctor, so I studied pre-med at UCSB, with a major in Religious Studies. I earned my Bachelors’ Degree at UCSB. After some work in the medical field I decided I wanted to focus more on wellness and health in the complementary field of natural medicine. I became a massage therapist. I studied with a healer in Santa Barbara during this time and practiced massage and healing work which led me to want to learn more about psychology.
I went on to study Contemplative Psychology at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and earned my Masters’ Degree in Psychology there. I was interested in acupuncture and oriental medicine and received regular Classical 5-Element Treatments from a seasoned practitioner. As a result, I stopped having migraines.
I returned to California and worked in a Children’s Center that cared for children who had been taken away from their families due to abuse or abandonment, working to obtain my clinical hours for the MFT licensure. I also worked in Emergency Psychiatric Services, Adult Therapy Services, and in a private therapy practice.
During the time I was working towards my MFT hours I enrolled in acupuncture school in Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine and graduated in 2003. I was concurrently enrolled in a 2 year Classical 5-Element Training Certification and completed that in 2001.
In the end, I earned two Masters’ Degrees and have 3 professional licenses. More recently I have become a Certified Laura Doyle Relationship Coach as well, which has opened me to practicing intimacy skills in all my relationships and has challenged me to be the best version of myself I can possibly imagine. I coach women in the 6 Intimacy Skills.
I have three children who are 18, 16, and 15 years old. Being a mother has been the joy of my life and stretches me the most to become the woman and mother I want to be. I love supporting people to be empowered in their lives, relationships and health. I trust in the healing power of the natural order of things and our innate inclination toward balance, growth, healing.
I am grateful to have learned an effective way to help others heal and grow through acupuncture and Chinese medicine, as well as psychotherapy and coaching. I am dedicated to my clients and I integrate all of my experience and knowledge into the different therapies I offer. I consider my practice a privilege and a sacred opportunity for healing and growth.

Is microneedling right for you?
This ancient form of acupuncture dates back centuries before the cultural revolution in China. It balances the root cause of symptoms, and diagnosis is based on the four observations of color, sound, odor and emotion. The five elements are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. When we are born, or shortly thereafter, our root imbalance is present and does not change throughout our lives. By listening to the ailing element, and treating it everytime, symptoms stemming from any of the other elements can be resolved.
5 Element treatments include causative factor diagnosis, clearing treatments, direct moxibustion and needling of the points. Regular sessions take approximately an hour to complete after all diagnosis and clearing treatments have been completed. Diagnosis and clearing sessions take longer.
Classical 5-Element treatments are like coming home. You will feel nourished at a deep level, your body will begin to heal itself, and your mind will feel clear.
The placement of fine needles in points and along channels on the body to balance the nervous system, the organ systems, and relieve pain and stress. I specialize in the Balance Method which is an excellent way to treat all kinds of symptoms, imbalances and pain. Most points used for these treatments are distal to the elbow and knees and retained for approximately 25 minutes.
You will feel at ease and pain free in no time.
The application of heat to points on the body with various forms of mugwort. This can be done as part of a Classical 5-Element treatment, or as indicated for other treatments. It can be used as a treatment with or without needles.
Moxibustion brings warmth and vitality to your body, mind and spirit.
The application of cups to the body to remove stagnation and deep impurities. The cups give a strong sensation of tightness around the cup and draw blood to the surface of the body. There are often marks that look dark purple or red that last anywhere from a few days to 3 weeks. The cups help resolve pain and detoxify the body.
Cupping removes blockages so you can move freely and release toxins.
Chinese medicine is not complete without the use of medicinal herbs. The herbs are effective for many illnesses and imbalances alone or in combination with acupuncture treatments. Herbal formulas are dispensed based on traditional diagnosis of the pattern of disease. This starts with the principles of yin/yang, hot/cold, internal/external and excess deficiency. From there, further differentiation of symptoms determine what Chinese herbal formulas will resolve the symptoms.
Regular and constant use of medicinal herbs will support your healing, your constitution and your emotional balance.. They will help keep you healthy and resilient for a long happy life.

The 6 Intimacy Skills have transformed my life and my relationships by helping me to uncover my blindspots and practice new skills.
I had so much wanted to be married and have a family. I met my husband in graduate school, and was drawn to his adventurous spirit. We had many excursions in nature and whenever there were challenges on our journey, he always physically and emotionally helped me pass through them. We often made it to amazing and beautiful places together that I wouldn’t have been able to go alone. There was just one moment when he touched my feet that my heart melted and I fell for him.
My dream came true when he asked me to marry him, and soon after we found out I was pregnant. This was wonderful news coupled with the challenge that our finances were very low. My job was very physical and I worked until a couple weeks before my daughter was born. I was lucky to have the support of my mother and went back to work after 4 months. I was so afraid that we wouldn’t have enough money and I tried to get my husband to find another job that paid more to support us. I also wanted more love and connection, and I tried to get that from him as well. None of my conversations with him about these issues made him take any more interest in me, or motivate him to do anything for me ever. Not ever.
I took care of all the finances, the house, the shopping, and then all three of the children we had. I didn’t feel supported and I wanted my husband to earn more money, help with the house, help with the children, love me, and plan for our future. I didn’t feel like that was happening at all. I was overwhelmed, angry, and completely heart broken. There were many arguments, emotional distress fights, and a lot of disconnection. It hadn’t turned out how I had imagined or hoped when I got married.
I tried to get us help. I enrolled him and us in many relationship growth and healing courses, marriage courses, and over two years of weekly couples therapy. There was some growth with all of these things, but none of them healed our marriage and gave me the feeling that I was loved and cherished by my husband. I really didn’t know what to do, and I knew that I wanted to experience a loving relationship in my life. I was in so much pain and on the edge of giving up.
Randomly a woman in a relationship support group I was in mentioned Laura Doyle. I looked it up and started to listen to her podcasts. I was intrigued, and I also was amused by her way with words, and how easily it seemed she could look at things differently and be happy. I felt like happiness was something so far from what I was experiencing, so I kept listening and learning. I realized that I had really been making a lot of mistakes in trying to build intimacy with my husband.
I started right off with using duct tape, keeping any critical thoughts to myself, and using the cheat phrase “I hear you”. I scoured my memory for ways I had been disrespectful and I apologized. I tried to figure out what self care was and what made me happy. It took a long time to figure that out, but I kept trying, and also used all the rest of the skills. I used lots of gratitude, lots of spouse and self fulfilling prophecies, and I experimented with vulnerability. I started to notice that instead of going to a different room, sometimes he would stay in the same room with me. Wherever he spent time with me, talked to me, helped me, or offered me something, I received graciously.
I joined the Ridiculously Happy Wives and got coaching. Wow, what a difference that made for me. The transformation has been gradual, yet solid. As I have grown in the skills my heart has healed and my marriage feels happier than ever before. I am so grateful to have come across these skills!
Now there is peace in our home. The level of emotional safety is the highest it’s ever been. I know my husband loves me and puts me first. He spends time with me, cuddles with me on the couch, shares his thoughts and asks me mine. He wants to please me and wants me to be happy. Now I’m on a mission to be as ridiculously happy as I possibly can be. Forever.
